An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that develops outside the uterus. Normally, the fertilized egg travels down the fallopian tube and into the uterus, where it attaches to the uterine lining.
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg implants in the fallopian tube (or rarely in other places, like the cervix).
An ectopic pregnancy is non-viable (has no heartbeat) and can be life-threatening. The fallopian tubes aren’t able to house a growing pregnancy, and they risk rupturing as the pregnancy develops.
The Symptoms of an Ectopic Pregnancy
Ectopic pregnancy can feel normal in the beginning, with normal pregnancy symptoms such as a missed period, tender and swollen breasts, and fatigue. If you have a potential ectopic pregnancy, you could also experience:
- Vaginal bleeding
- Dizziness or weakness
- Pain in your lower abdomen, pelvis, and lower back
When the fallopian tube ruptures, you will experience severe abdominal pain and bleeding, as well as:
- Fainting
- Low blood pressure (hypotension)
- Shoulder pain
- Rectal pressure or bowel problems
Seek immediate medical attention if you’re experiencing any of these signs of ectopic pregnancy, as it’s a medical emergency.
Get An Ultrasound
Receiving an ultrasound will determine if you’re experiencing an ectopic pregnancy. With an ultrasound, a healthcare provider can determine if the pregnancy is growing inside your uterus or not and know whether it’s ectopic.
