There are challenges that come after an abortion procedure, specifically mental health struggles for some women. If you are considering abortion and already struggle with mental health, risks may be even more significant for you.
Working through emotions from the distant past can be overwhelming, confusing, and difficult to process. If you’re struggling after an abortion, healing is possible.
Mental Health Struggles
Studies show the link between mental health and abortion. An article, Psychiatric Complications of Abortion, shares that “no research study has found that induced abortion is associated with a better mental health outcome.” This study also states the following as possible emotional effects of abortion:
- Alcohol or illegal drug dependence
- Mood disorders (including depression)
- Anxiety disorders
In a study by the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, it was concluded that women who felt even slightly pressured into an abortion were more likely to experience psychological effects afterward, including:
- Depression
- Guilt
- Shame
- Regret
- Self-hatred
- Feelings of worthlessness or being unworthy of love
- Low self-esteem
- Anxiety
- Thoughts or attempts of suicide
Post-Abortion Stress Syndrome
Some mental health professionals have created a label to diagnose women struggling with post-abortion feelings so they can get the help they need. Women can experience Post-Abortion Stress Syndrome (PASS) differently.
Some women are at an increased risk of the following:
- Substance use disorder
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Suicidal behaviors
